Felbrigg, I'm listening to your podcasts in order. Well done! I'm enjoying it, and have a link to your site on my blog. If you should happen to acquire The Traveller Adventure (available from drivethrurpg) in the beginning matter, there is a short explanation of "2d6 for characteristic or less" as a stat-check mechanic.
